Susan B. Anthony Community Connections Charrette
June 9th, 2007

The Susan B. Anthony community design charrette took place on June 9th, 2007 at the Café Underground Railroad on West Main Street. Over sixty members of the community joined twenty design professionals to brainstorm ideas on how they would like to see their community change.

The morning started off with introductory remarks from Dawn Noto, president of the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood Association, Mayor Duffy, Cynthia Howk of the Landmark Society, and Joni Monroe from the RRCDC. The attendees split into nine small groups, each addressing one of five pre-determined focus areas and, following the opening speeches, toured the area and began writing down and drawing out their ideas. At the end of the afternoon, each group gave a short presentation detailing their concepts. The drawings and notes were collected by the RRCDC to be organized and digitized.

A preliminary report containing all the material from the charrette will be presented to the Susan B. Anthony Neighborhood Charrette Steering Committee and analysis of the ideas will be summarized in a final report.

DESIGN MATTERS 4
Emergence of Forgotten Neighborhoods
March 20-22, 2007

Design Matters 4 kicked off with a free lecture by Thomas Farley (MD, MPH). The lecture addressed the question of what it takes to reclaim our neighborhoods affected by intense vacancy and abandonment. It was devoted to conversations on issues such as investment, stabilization, empowerment, collaboration and desirability - as they are critical to thinking about new ways to reclaim areas affected by abandonment and disinvestment.
